Holidays Kemetic Practice Spiritual Growth

Have yourself a Kemetic Christmas: Making mainstream holidays work for you as a Kemetic practitioner

This is my third Christmas as a Kemetic. While not a vastly long time, it’s been long enough for me to learn a thing or two about how I want to celebrate the holiday season. Rather than abandoning the mainstream, I’ve opted to create my own Kemetic Christmas holiday. Each year, I experiment with different ways of adapting themes and concepts from ancient Egyptian religion and introducing them to our modern holidays. I do this because it works for me and perhaps also, because I very well might be doing something that’s never been done before. To me, that’s magic, that’s what yields new insights and spiritual growth. That’s taking ancient Egypt and giving them WiFi, smartphones, laptops and English Breakfast tea. Cosmic! Are they not sharing their culture and technology with us? It’s only fair. Likewise, you should feel free do what works for you, too.

Reaching this level of decisiveness about my own path  — and doing what works for me — has brought a tremendous sense of peace, stability and wholeness to my life. Since becoming a Kemetic pagan during the lockdowns of 2020, I can honestly look at my life and say, there’s nothing missing or lacking. Sure, I want to marry my partner, finish my RN, save for a house of our own someday and maybe have a baby but still, there’s nothing missing or lacking. I am whole. That’s my wish for every human being. If everyone found their own peace and wholeness, the world would have far less war and conflict and our planet would be a very different place. It sounds simplistic, and it is. It’s also quite profound, if you’ve ever experienced such blessings in your own life. Reaching this place within myself is what celebrating a Kemetic Christmas has given me. Now that I’ve reached it, I want to help others reach it, too.

The netjeru have relayed to me that peace should be a topic in everyone’s hearts and minds this holiday season. In my last post with Lady Sekhmet, there was an undercurrent of concern for peace, safety and stability in our world. I’ve also worked with Seti I for peace. Peace on Earth starts with peace within. Your peace extends to others around you, then around the whole world and around the entire universe, transforming all that it touches. Know that somewhere in the world, right now, someone is praying for you. May you live in the peace and wholeness that is your birthright. Maybe you’ll join the prayer?

This is what celebrating a Kemetic Christmas should do for you. It should give you a powerful and stabilising sense of peace; a peace that is whole and entire unto itself, yet also serves as a solid foundation for the next steps in your soul’s evolution. You already have everything because you are the creative essence of Atum, the All that Is. Abundance and generosity naturally flow through your life, like a great river. Sound like a river we know? Sail upon the great river of peace and see where it takes you! If the holiday season is not doing that for you, I would suggest stepping back, looking at the whole picture and deciding for yourself what is and is not working for you.

I’ve had to learn to be patient with people and allow them to have their own opinions and traditions, simply because they will anyway. That doesn’t mean you can’t weave your own Kemetic Christmas traditions with their existing Christmas traditions and coordinate your holidays like a waltz, without colliding or stepping on anyone’s toes.

When the tree goes up, I also put up my own little Kemetic Christmas tree. I decorate it with cool Egyptian stuff, and I love it! Tree cults did exist in ancient Egypt, and I feel like I’m paying homage to their culture as well as to the universal tree of life, when I decorate my Kemetic Christmas tree. My little tree is always brimming with positive energy, which fills the home. That’s how I know I’m on the right path; if the energy starts tanking, I know I need to do something different to raise it up again. Pay attention to what you’re feeling! Another new, personal tradition is contemplating what I call the Kemetic nativity scene, based on a powerful vision I had last year of Isis amongst the river reeds, with baby Horus. This brings me closer to my matron goddess, Isis and celebrates the victory of Isis, Osiris and Horus over death and destruction, or isfet.

I’ve made Christmas work for me by making it a Kemetic Christmas. Christmas has always been a versatile and adaptable holiday, how else could it go from a pagan holiday, to a Christian holiday, to a modern marketing phenomenon and back again? The netjeru are simply asking me to share with readers, that no matter what you choose to celebrate or how you choose to celebrate it, let your holidays, as well as yourselves, be instruments of peace.

Thank you, for reading Kemetic Blog. Have yourself a Kemetic Christmas, let your heart be light!

The 25th is the birth of Ra, meditation and fasting occurs using Ausar as guidance during the winter solstice leading to. It is said to wear white during the 21st to 24th.

Thank you, that’s fascinating. Do you have a particular tradition you follow? I also read about palm rushes used during the winter solstice but could never find a source to confirm.

Thank you! I think there’s a whole other secret life of planet Earth going on and once you decode it, you find everything is imbued with meaning. We’re so busy and preoccupied with our human-constructed world, we tend to forget it’s just that, a construct. Hope you had a nice holiday!
